Lightware|Architectural Lighting Design

MACAM Museum

Colecção permanente do Museu MACAM

MACAM — the Armando Martins Museum — is one of the most anticipated museum projects in Lisbon, opened in 2025, with more than 2,000 m² dedicated to modern and contemporary art. Lightware was responsible for the complete architectural and museum lighting design, developing a lighting strategy oriented towards artistic perception, conservation and spatial narrative.

Lighting concept and a curatorial approach to light

The lighting creates an atmospheric progression that follows the temporal and stylistic character of the works on display. The lighting design was developed to:

  • reinforce the emotional reading of each piece
  • set the rhythm of the visit and its visual pauses
  • guide the route through layers of intensity and contrast
  • establish subtle relationships between light, shadow and materiality

Light works not merely as a functional tool, but as a mediator between the work and the observer, encouraging contemplation and perceptual depth.

Conservation, colour temperature and exposure control

The lighting scheme was developed to rigorous technical criteria, respecting museum standards and international recommendations, including CIE guidance for the display of art.

  • illuminance (lux) control appropriate to each artistic medium
  • limits on light exposure for sensitive works
  • selection of high-CRI sources for chromatic fidelity
  • balancing of colour temperature for curatorial coherence

The balance between preservation and visibility was a central principle: protecting the works without compromising how they are read.

Spatial experience and the visitor's route

The lighting strategy was designed to follow the fluidity of the exhibition route, creating zones of approach, focus and pause:

  • accent lighting directed at key points
  • transition zones with lower visual contrast
  • distinct emotional atmospheres from room to room
  • a hierarchy between general, accent and detail lighting

This gradation guides visitors intuitively, without intrusive signage.

Lighting identity and architectural coherence

The lighting integrates discreetly into the museum's architecture, ensuring:

  • physically invisible integration of the luminaires
  • reduced glare and reflections
  • dimming systems adaptable to future curation
  • museographic flexibility and technical modularity

The result is an environment where light is quiet yet present — discreet yet expressive.

Lightware's lighting design for the MACAM Museum represents an approach of excellence to museum lighting, uniting technical rigour, curatorial sensitivity and a deep understanding of light's role in the emotional mediation between art and observer.
